What is fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that causes extreme fatigue and pain all over the body.
Many patients describe it as having a “low grade flu all the time”.
-stiffness in the muscles
Conventional medicine has only painkillers and antidepressants to offer. Massage and chiropractic adjustments can bring temporary relief to the symptoms.
What about homeopathy?
Homeopathy looks at the whole individual, not the diagnosis. All the symptoms are taken into consideration: the physical ones and the emotional ones, plus the medical history and general lifestyle.
The physical symptoms of muscle stiffness, aching joints and depression, often point to the remedy Bryonia or Rhus Tox.
As a homeopath, however, I need to get to the root cause of the dis-ease. Virtually every single case of fibromyalgia I have encountered affected women and all of them came with a heavy personal history: alcoholic parents, physical or even sexual abuse in early life, divorce, emotional trauma.
Of course everyone reacts differently to such events. However, I noticed that a particular personality type seems to be more prone to this condition: after suffering many traumatic experiences, the person becomes the “carer” and “protector” of others; often they are the ones who keep the family together and are always on the lookout to protect the more vulnerable members of the family from possible harm.
Later on in life they choose a career in the caring profession, becoming nurses, looking after children or the elderly.
Control is a very strong element in their life: they need to keep everything under control in order to feel safe and well.
Empathy is another key word in these cases. The patient is very in tune with other people’s feelings, particularly other people’s suffering. They are over-sensitive and it is hard for them not to be negatively affected by other people’s problems.
In other words: they almost care too much!
This points to a particular miasm, ie, the genetic predisposition of the patient. Homeopathy can energetically work on a very deep level and dramatically improve the quality of life of someone suffering from this condition.
What about nutrition?
Once the symptoms of fibromyalgia al under control, an individualised diet plan can help maintain a good level of health and vitality.
It is important to take into account the individual’s possible food intolerances and preferences, however, here are some very beneficial type of food for this condition:
-turmeric as supplement: excellent anti-inflammatory, keep away the pain in the body.
-inflammation is a big trigger in fibromyalgia, therefore avoiding all pro-inflammation foods like sugar, refined carbs and processed food in general, is a good idea.
-fresh green leaf veg and cruciferous, like spinach and broccoli
-fish and white meat
-food rich in omega 3 like salmon, seeds, avocado
It is my experience that, once successfully treated homeopathically, the condition gets to a much more manageable level and can then be maintained with proper nutrition.
This is the best way to keep the doctor, drugs and even the homeopath away, once you learn how to use food as your medicine!
