Can you treat autism? Yes you can!
Perhaps your child has just been diagnosed with autism: now what?
The pediatricians will tell you about speech and language therapy, OT or ABA.
When my son was diagnosed he was four years old and barely verbal. He only had a handful of words, I wasn’t even sure how much he understood when we talked to him and his aggressive behaviour was a big concern for us.
Yet, all we got after the diagnosis was a booklet that explained how autism is an “incurable life time disability” and how to “cope” with it. The speech and language therapist gave up almost immediately, there was no other suggestion or service on offer.
This can be a crushing experience for parents. Some parents talk about going through a “grieving process”. You grieve for the life you thought your child was going to have and now has been taken away from you. The diagnosis is so definitive, like a life sentence with no appeal.
WHAT IF I TOLD YOU THAT THERE IS SOMETHING YOU CAN DO TO HELP YOUR CHILD?
Maybe that was a blessing for me, because it started me on a research that led me to become an Autism Specialist.
Now I know that autism is treatable, as my son has grown to be a fully verbal, calm and happy boy, with friends and hobbies and passions, in other words: a life!
AUTISM IS A MEDICAL CONDITION
Autism is not a just a neurological or psychiatric condition. We all see our kids have a number of what doctors call “co-morbidities” like:
-stimming (hand flapping, toe walking etc)
-frequent ear/throat infection OR never sick
All these symptoms are part of the whole picture. The question is WHY?
OUR KIDS ARE TOXIC
All children on the spectrum have poor ability to detox from all the pollutants we are all exposed to on a daily basis. DNA tests usually show mutations in the genes responsible for the methylation process, which is the process that allows the expulsion of toxins, among other things.
The organs responsible for detoxing are our liver, stomach and kidneys, in our words, our GUT.
THE GUT-BRAIN CONNECTION
When I read about the gut-brain connection, everything started to make sense.
Most of our kids are very picky eaters and crave bread, pasta, sweets, in other words: carbs and sugar. There is constipation or diarrhea in many cases. Changing diet and going on a gluten free/sugar free diet is often really hard and frustrating for the whole family.
Stomach pain: some small children who are non verbal cannot express what hurts and often display self injurious behaviour or they are angry or upset most of the time. Once the gut issues is addressed, these behaviours disappear.
Gut dysbiosis or “leaky gut” is a real medical issue and it affects brain function.
Biomedical and functional medicine use aggressive drugs to detox the system: Nystatin, NAC, chelation protocols aim at detoxing the system from harmful bacteria, yeast, heavy metals or parasites that thrive in an unhealthy gut. However, the side effects can be severe and making your child’s symptoms worse is not something you want to see!
I have tried most modalities in the past, with no results. This too was a blessing in the end, because now I can use my personal experience and expertise to help others. This is my programme:
The first step is to remove toxins as much as possible. It is not a quick or easy process and it is done slowly and gently in order to avoid aggravation.
Once toxins start to leave the body, you can see the first improvements in your child: better eye contact, more calm behaviour, improved appetite and digestion.
The second step addresses the gut in order to repair its functions and get to optimal conditions.
The final step is about replenishing and strengthening the immune system and at this stage you can add specific vitamins and nutrients.
I have seen non verbal children say their first words after the first step. Children with aggressive behaviour become much calmer. Children who were completely withdrawn in their own world become aware of their surrounding and interact with family and friends.
Holistic medicine and nutrition are the most gentle and effective methods to achieve these results.
