Insomnia is a huge issue in our society and, consequently, there is a huge industry dedicated to helping people with sleeping issues. Homeopathy can definitely help with insomnia too, which is the great news.
HOW DOES CONVENTIONAL MEDICINE DEAL WITH INSOMNIA?
The quickest way is getting prescription sleeping pills. There are other more natural supplements that are available over the counter, like melatonin.
Prescription drugs can have side effects, like drowsiness and nausea, making you feel sleepy all the time without actually making you sleep, while melatonin can be very effective at helping you fall asleep, but not necessarily at keeping you asleep throughout the night.

Homeopathy helps by taking into consideration the whole individual. Sleeping disturbance is often a sign that the whole system is out of balance, there are health issues that the body is subconsciously trying to suppress and the homeopath, like a good detective, needs to find out what they are.

The first thing I do is to try and identify the root cause. There is always a reason for our body to change and give us what we call “symptoms”; it is the way our body communicates to us that something is off balance.
Describing to the homeopath what was going on in your life when the sleeping disturbance started can be hugely important and give the homeopath the clue as to cause and effect.
HOMEOPATHY FOR STRESS
Daily stress is a big contributing factor when it comes to the quality of our sleep. However, “stress” is an umbrella term that needs to be investigated too: what is the trigger? Is it work/family issues/ongoing situations?
Symptoms of stress-related insomnia include:
-inability to switch off our chattering mind
-re-living events of the day, dwelling on what we could have/shoud have done
-anticipatory anxiety about work/future events

Sometimes a traumatic event can put us off balance in various ways. In my experience, sleep disturbance occurs when the trauma has been “brushed under the carpet” and not properly addressed, processed and digested.
One patient came to me to help with her chronic insomnia. She told me that there was absolutely no reason why she should not be able to sleep: she had no particular stress in her life, she was very strong, she described herself as a “type A personality”, was not easily fazed by events. Yet even prescription drugs could not help her sleep.
After a brief conversation about her life and past events, I learnt how she suffered multiple consecutive miscarriages and how she had no one at the time to help her to get over them, either emotionally or even physically. She simply “got on with it”. She was also estranged from her father, after finding out about a family secret.
It was interesting to me how this patient did not consider those events as “traumatic” in any way, it was just something that happened and she had to move on.
This looked like a block from the emotional side. Sometimes it is uncomfortable and embarrassing to show our emotions in public, particularly tears and upset. It makes us look “weak” and “needy”. That is what a patient needing Nat Mur would think anyway. So that’s what I gave her and after that, she sent me a lovely text, to say she was sleeping again, but other than that, she didn’t feel any “different”. Well, that’s because homeopathy did its job and brought her back to herself again!

In order to achieve real healing, it is important to work on the root causes of the insomnia. Sometimes this can take a few weeks, other times it takes longer, depending on the individual.
